Grades 4 & 5

Students will be able to:

● Understand how and why people build monumental structures.

● Understand how structures can reflect a culture’s beliefs and values.

● Understand that maps show us where things are located on Earth. GeoCivics 2024

● Understand that physical maps can show us landforms.

Students will also learn to identify landmarks throughout the Navajo Nation in Arizona. They will describe the importance of different Arizona and Navajo Nation landmarks and find the answers of why they are important. As a final, students will pick one of the landmarks of their choice and write a summary comprising 1-3 paragraphs based on their findings (location, history, and importance). Landmark gives us an important part of events, people, or places that hold cultural, historical, or national importance. The location of a landmark is crucial as it often relates directly to the historical context or significance of the history it stands for, storytelling of the area, home to Navajos Indian Tribe, and many natural wonders. Landmarks typically depict prominent figures, events, or natural formations that are symbolic of American identity or achievements, especially the cultural significance in national narratives, reinforcing their importance in collective memory and identity
