Understanding Puerto Rico & Modern US Imperialism

Students will strengthen their foundational knowledge about the history of enslavement in Puerto Rico. and will learn about Africans trafficked through the international slave trade.
Students will analyze the historical and contemporary barriers to justice experienced by the
Afro-Puerto Rican community and highlight communal points of pride, African cultural resistance, and evolving socio-political movements. Students will conduct independent research on the legacy of Marcos Xirro and use what they've learned from the work of Guillermo A. Baralt to take on the role of historian.
