Local Invasive Species - Take Action!

Students will learn to use self-guided research to learn more about the impact of invasive species on  local ecosystem and/or to a local community. Students will locate community members or interest groups already working to manage invasive species and will work collaboratively on a project to evaluate invasive species populations and impact in their community. Students will design a civic action project that tackles the issues of invasive species.

Exploring Invasive Species through text evidence

Students will learn about how invasive species are introduced to a place, how they impact ecosystems, cities, and towns, and the efforts by people from these regions to control invasive species populations. Students will learn key vocabulary and how to choose strong text evidence to support answers to text-dependent questions. In the lesson, students will explore specific invasive plant and animal species in US Territories and Alaska, specifically, the North American opossum, green iguana, tamaligi tree, and brown tree snake, and they will explore their impact on the environment and people in those regions.
